Record of local graves

9/07/2008 11:10:00 AM
On Saturday, June 13 a small number of members of the Society, along with a family who came along to help locate one such grave, visited the location of seven of the known graves, only one of which we have no information for.

The grave visited was that of a girl Greer at Bibbenluke, which has been marked but only with the surname, thanks to former resident Noel Stewart.

We visited another gravesite at Jimcumbilly, which has become controversial, as we have two or more differing versions of its occupants. Is it Mr or Mrs Robert Johnson and children, or is it Thomas or Joshua Moore? We do have to find proof.

The next graves were all known to the landowners on whose properties they exist and accurate information has been found, namely, Skipper infant twins in the Bucky Springs area, Margaret Mackenzie in the Killarney area, McLeod infant twins in the Tayfield area, McLeod infant twins in the Mila area. The unknown grave is on the eastern boundary of Bataan.

We did not have time to visit the Locks Flat site at Craigie, however we have been given many names of the occupants. This trip will be rescheduled for a later date, as will others of which we have only basic information.

We do thank those landowners who cooperated with this project and particularly thank one landowner, who has generously donated funds towards the project on his property.

Any information given shall be appreciated and will be recorded and verified by the members who have committed to take on this project. Information should be directed to President Tom on 6458 3298, Maureen on 6458 3257, Margaret on 6458 3612, Wendy on 6458 3497 (after hours) or Secretary Ann.
