Bombala Division B moved from marginal to drought and Division A moved from satisfactory to drought this week, with the whole of the board now considered in drought.
The latest drought figures show 62.7% of the State in drought (up from 48.4%), and 23.7% experiencing marginal conditions (up from 23.6%). Just 13.6% of the State is classified as satisfactory (down from 28%).
“These figures speak for themselves - unfortunately this month has seen a dramatic increase in the area affected by drought,” Minister Macdonald said.
“Areas that have slipped back into drought include all or parts of Milparinka, Cobar, Dubbo, Molong, Central Tablelands, and Mudgee in the west, Coonabarabran, Tamworth and Northern Slopes in the North West, Bombala, Cooma and Braidwood in the south.
“The biggest challenge faced by growers, especially in northern NSW, is the declining soil moisture levels.
“On a brighter note, there have been early reports of decent rain around parts of the north and central west during the long weekend, and hopefully this will be followed by more to help ensure crop growth.”
Minister Macdonald said above average temperatures had contributed to the drying out of seedbed moisture, while frosts had also been reported in most areas.
“These poor seasonal conditions also impact on the livestock industries, with reduced grazing production, especially in central and southern areas,” he said.
“There continues to be an increase in numbers of stock going to saleyards as the confidence in securing winter cropping deteriorates. All in all, it paints a pretty grim picture for our farming sector, and we can only hope June produces some good winter rainfall to help crops and pasture growth.”
Minister Macdonald said the recent $6 million announcement of the extension of drought assistance measures funding was a sign of the State Government’s ongoing support for farmers.
“We’ve spent more than $390 million to date and will continue to work closely with industry groups such as NSW Farmers’ Association to support our vital primary industries sector through this one in 100 year drought event,” he said.
