Ami blasts her way to victory at the Nitro Champs

14/05/2008 11:07:00 AM
In an exciting achievement that has her supportive father glowing, Ami just won the Motorvational Junior Dragster of the famed Nitro Champs at Eastern Creek in Sydney on May 2 and 3.

The Junior Dragster event saw Ami racing against 27 other drivers aged from 8 years to 17, with the best rising stars coming from all over Australia to compete.

Ami was the top qualifier with 8.638 seconds over the quarter mile, and eventually won the entire title with 8.688 seconds against Fiona Crisp, also of NSW.

“The Junior Dragster was a squeaker, with both girls running even at the tree, before King won the bracket by the narrowest of margins,” the Western Sydney International Dragway website records.

Naturally Ami, just about to turn 15, was thrilled to bits with her big win, and is more in love than ever with her Motorvational Tubing Car and its Blockzilla engine.

And the duo have quite a lot of competing ahead, with her next big events being the Track Championships in Sydney and the Internationals in Queensland, where both Ami and her brother, Jonathon will take on the quarter mile.

Jonathon, now 13, is also developing a natural talent for drag racing, and like his sister, has racked up some impressive point scores that they both hope will stand them in good stead for the June Winter Nationals.

The Winter Nationals are considered by the Kings as the biggest event of the drag racing calendar, with both Ami and Jon needing first places to win the pointscores of their categories.

Proud father, John, says that our two locals are in with a chance, and after only a few years of competing behind them, this is most impressive indeed.

Of course drag racing is not a cheap sport to pursue, but John says all the travelling and expense is worth it, especially when he heard the ‘huge rap’ that announcers gave the young Bombala competitors at a recent meet.

“I’m usually down with the cars for the starts and you don’t hear anything from there, but I was in the crowd this time and couldn’t believe my ears when I heard the announcers giving our junior dragsters from Bombala special mention and a big rap just before the race,” John said.

With Ami and Jon both looking to have very bright futures on the Australian drag racing scene, John is now looking to expand their sponsorship with a billboard arrangement on the side of their transport vehicle.

Obviously the Kings need to travel far and wide to compete, with any group or business who may be interested in featuring their name on this travelling billboard, and helping support our very own Bombala junior dragsters, being encouraged to contact John King on 6458 4997.
